Kintetsu Rail Pass & Hinotori (ひのとり) Limited Express Guide: Travel Between Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, Ise-Shima, and Nagoya on a Budget

JPViva Cover: Kintetsu Rail Pass and Hinotori Limited Express Guide Cheap Travel Between Osaka Nara Kyoto Ise-Shima and Nagoya

Save ~2,000 yen vs. Shinkansen between Osaka and Nagoya aboard Kintetsu's Hinotori Limited Express, and compare the 5,000-yen Weekend Pass vs. Rail Pass.

Travelers moving between Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, Ise-Shima, and Nagoya often default to JR trains or the Tokaido Shinkansen without realizing that Japan’s largest private railway network—Kintetsu Railway (近鉄 – Kinki Nippon Tetsudo)—connects all five destinations for significantly less money. In fact, Kintetsu’s terminal in Nara drops you 15 minutes closer to the deer park and Todai-ji Temple than JR Nara Station.

On the intercity corridor between Osaka-Namba (大阪難波) and Kintetsu-Nagoya (近鉄名古屋), Kintetsu’s metallic-red flagship Limited Express ひのとり (Hinotori) offers pod-style back-shell reclining seats while costing roughly 2,000 yen less each way than the Shinkansen. Here is how to choose the right pass whether you hold a Japanese residence card or are hosting visiting family.

1. The ひのとり (Hinotori) Limited Express: Osaka to Nagoya for ~4,540–4,990 yen

Riding a reserved-seat Nozomi Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Nagoya costs 6,680 yen one way (50 minutes on the bullet train, plus a 20-minute, 240-yen Midosuji Subway ride if you start in Namba or Shinsaibashi).

By contrast, Kintetsu’s Series 80000 ひのとり (Hinotori) departs directly from underground Osaka-Namba Station (大阪難波), stops at Osaka-Uehommachi, Tsuruhashi, and Tsu, and arrives at Kintetsu-Nagoya Station right next to JR Nagoya in about 2 hours and 5 minutes:

  • One-way fare breakdown for Osaka-Namba ↔ Kintetsu-Nagoya aboard ひのとり:
    • Base rail fare (普通運賃): 2,860 yen.
    • Limited Express surcharge (特急料金): 1,930 yen.
    • Hinotori special car fee (ひのとり特別車両料金): +200 yen for a Regular Seat (レギュラーシート) or +900 yen for a leather Premium Seat (プレミアムシート).
    • Total cost: A standard Hinotori seat costs 4,990 yen at the window (or ~4,540 to 4,740 yen when combined with a pass or discounted ticket), while the top-tier プレミアムシート costs 5,690 yen—still roughly 1,000 to 2,000 yen cheaper per trip than an ordinary Shinkansen seat.

Traveling between Osaka-Namba and Nagoya aboard the Kintetsu Hinotori Limited Express costs around 4,540 to 4,740 yen total—saving roughly 2,000 yen each way compared to the Tokaido Shinkansen.

Inside the train, cabin comfort rivals airline business class:

  1. Back-shell seats in every car (全席バックシェル): Both the 2+2 Regular cars (116cm seat pitch, matching Shinkansen Green Cars) and the 2+1 heated genuine-leather プレミアムシート cars (130cm pitch with power leg rests) enclose the back of every seat inside a rigid shell. You can recline all the way back without ever intruding on the passenger behind you.
  2. Onboard amenities: Free IC-card-locked oversized luggage lockers (Suica/ICOCA) sit at the car entrances, every seat has an AC power outlet and free Wi-Fi, and an onboard cafe counter brews freshly ground hot coffee for 200 yen.

Every seat on the Hinotori—both 2+1 leather Premium cars and 2+2 Regular cars—features a fixed back shell so you can recline fully without encroaching on the passenger behind you.

2. Residents vs. short-stay visitors: 近鉄週末フリーパス vs. Kintetsu Rail Pass

Kintetsu offers two separate unlimited-ride passes depending on your visa status in Japan:

A. For Foreign Residents & Japanese Citizens: 近鉄週末フリーパス (Kintetsu Weekend Free Pass — 5,000 yen)

  • Price: 5,000 yen for adults (大人), 2,500 yen for children (こども).
  • Coverage: Unlimited rides across all Kintetsu Railway lines spanning Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, Mie (Ise-Shima), and Aichi (Nagoya), plus the Mount Katsuragi Ropeway (葛城山ロープウェイ), over 3 consecutive weekend days:
    • Either Friday–Saturday–Sunday (金・土・日), or
    • Saturday–Sunday–Monday (土・日・月).
  • Mandatory advance purchase rule: You must purchase the 近鉄週末フリーパス at least 1 day before your start date (乗車開始日の前日までに購入) at a Kintetsu station ticket machine or counter. Same-day purchase is not permitted.
  • Instant round-trip savings: A normal round-trip base ticket between Osaka and Nagoya already costs 2,860 × 2 = 5,720 yen. Buying the 5,000-yen Weekend Free Pass immediately saves 720 yen on the Nagoya round trip alone, while giving you unlimited side trips to Nara, Kyoto, or Ise-Shima all weekend (to ride ひのとり or other Limited Express trains, simply buy the 特急券 seat supplement separately).

B. For Visiting Family & Tourists (短期滞在 Temporary Visitor Visa): Kintetsu Rail Pass (1 / 2 / 5 Days)

Short-stay visitors can purchase the digital Kintetsu Rail Pass online:

  • Kintetsu Rail Pass 1day (1,900 yen): Unlimited rides across Osaka, Nara, and Kyoto lines for 1 day, including Nara Kotsu buses around Nara Park, Todai-ji, and Horyu-ji.
  • Kintetsu Rail Pass 2day (3,700 yen): Two consecutive days covering Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, Yoshino, and Asuka.
  • Kintetsu Rail Pass 5day (4,900 yen) & 5day plus (6,700 yen): Five consecutive days across the entire Kintetsu network from Osaka, Nara, and Kyoto all the way to Ise-Shima and Nagoya (the 5day plus version adds unlimited Nara Kotsu and Mie Kotsu buses in Ise-Shima and Toba).

3. Why Kintetsu beats JR for Nara Park and Ise-Shima day trips

Beyond intercity savings to Nagoya, Kintetsu stations sit closer to major sightseeing areas in Kansai and Mie:

  1. Nara Park (奈良公園) and Todai-ji Temple (東大寺):
    • Arriving at JR Nara Station leaves you with a 15-to-20-minute uphill walk before reaching the park.
    • Boarding a Kintetsu Rapid Express (快速急行 – Kaisoku Kyuko, no Limited Express surcharge required) from Osaka-Namba takes 39 minutes (680 yen standalone) and drops you at Kintetsu-Nara Station (近鉄奈良駅), directly beside Kofuku-ji Temple and Nara Park’s deer.
  2. Ise Jingu Grand Shrine (伊勢神宮) and Toba (伊勢志摩):
    • Kintetsu runs direct Limited Express trains—including the sightseeing train しまかぜ (Shimakaze) and 伊勢志摩ライナー (Ise-Shima Liner)—straight from Osaka-Namba, Kyoto, and Kintetsu-Nagoya to Iseshi and Ujiyamada stations in under two hours.

Kintetsu-Nara Station places you right beside Nara Park and Kofuku-ji Temple (saving a 15-minute walk compared to JR Nara Station), with discounted weekend passes for residents and 1-to-5-day Rail Passes for visitors.

To reserve front-row panoramic seats (前面展望席) in Car 1 or the rear car of ひのとり and しまかぜ, book online through the Kintetsu Ticketless Service (近鉄インターネット予約・発売サービス). Seat sales open exactly one month before departure at 10:30 AM JST, with interactive seat maps that let you pick your exact window seat on your phone without printing a paper express ticket.
