JPViva Cover: Budget Gyudon Chain Breakfast Guide in Japan Matsuya 330 Yen Set Sukiya Mazenokke with Suki Pass and Yoshinoya Free Rice Refills

Compare morning Asa-teishoku sets across Japan's big 3 beef-bowl chains: Matsuya's 330-yen egg set with free extra-large rice, Sukiya'…

Picking up two chilled rice balls (おにぎり) and a bottled coffee at a Japanese convenience store (コンビニ) before work easily costs 420 to 480 yen. Right outside almost every commuter station in Japan, the big three beef-bowl chains—Matsuya (松屋), Sukiya (すき家), and Yoshinoya (吉野家)—serve freshly cooked morning set meals (朝定食 – Asa-teishoku) with steaming rice, miso soup, eggs, and protein for just 320 to 450 yen tax-included.

Each chain has its own morning hours, rice-upgrade perks, and discount passes. Knowing how the three compare lets you eat a hot breakfast or early brunch for less than a konbini snack.

1. Matsuya (松屋, 05:00 to 11:00 AM): The 330-yen W-Choice Egg Set and free extra-large rice

Among Japan’s major restaurant chains, Matsuya offers the strongest calorie-per-yen morning deal. Served daily from 05:00 to 11:00 AM, Matsuya’s breakfast lineup works both for early commuters and late-morning weekend brunch:

  • W-Choice Egg on Rice Wで選べる玉子かけごはん (330 yen tax-included): The single best-value hot restaurant breakfast in Japan. The “W” (Double) means you make two selections at the ticket machine (券売機) or on your phone:
    1. Choose your egg style (玉子): Raw egg (生玉子 – Nama-tamago) for classic Japanese tamago-kake gohan, or soft-boiled poached egg (半熟玉子 – Hanjuku-tamago) if you prefer cooked whites.
    2. Choose 1 of 4 side bowls (選べる小鉢): Mini simmered beef dish (ミニ牛皿 – Mini Gyusara), fermented soybeans with green onions (納豆 – Natto), grated yam (とろろ – Tororo), or chilled tofu (冷奴 – Hiyayakko). Picking ミニ牛皿 gives you savory gyudon beef, egg, rice, and hot miso soup (みそ汁) for 330 yen total.
  • Sausage & Egg Morning Set ソーセージエッグ定食 (~490 to 530 yen): Crisp grilled sausage, one or two sunny-side-up eggs (目玉焼き), shredded cabbage salad, seasoned seaweed, pickled radish, miso soup, rice, plus your choice of side bowl (ミニ牛皿 or 納豆).
  • Grilled Salmon Set 得朝焼鮭定食 / 焼鮭定食: Flaky salted salmon fillet grilled in-store, paired with toasted nori and a mini side dish.

Served daily from 05:00 to 11:00 AM at Matsuya, morning sets starting at 330 yen include miso soup, a choice of mini beef or natto side dish, and free large or extra-large rice upgrades.

Matsuya’s standout rule is free rice size upgrades across all morning sets (ライス全サイズ同額):

  1. Whether you select Small (ライス小盛), Regular (ライス並盛), Large (ライス大盛), or Extra-Large (ライス特盛), your Wで選べる玉子かけごはん still costs flat 330 yen.
  2. Instead of feeling rushed at the entrance ticket kiosk when a line forms behind you, take a seat and order through 松屋モバイルオーダー (Matsuya Mobile Order) inside the official 松屋フーズ公式アプリ. Ordering on the app lets you calmly pick ライス特盛 + 半熟玉子 + ミニ牛皿, earn 1% to 10% Matsuya points (1pt = 1 yen), and apply digital coupons.

2. Sukiya (すき家, 05:00 to 11:00 AM): The 320-yen まぜのっけ朝食 and monthly Sukipass

When you want vegetables and a lighter texture in the morning, Sukiya (serving breakfast from 05:00 to 11:00 AM) shines with its okra-and-egg combinations:

  • Mazenokke Breakfast まぜのっけ朝食 (320 yen standard): Includes steamed rice, miso soup, a bowl of blanched sliced okra topped with a soft-boiled egg (オクラと温玉), and a packet of fragrant bonito flakes (かつお節). Pour the okra and soft egg over your hot rice, sprinkle the bonito flakes, drizzle Sukiya’s lightly sweet breakfast soy sauce (朝食しょうゆ), and mix it together.
  • Beef Mazenokke Breakfast 牛まぜのっけ朝食 (420 yen): Adds a side dish of simmered beef (牛小鉢) to the standard Mazenokke tray for an extra 100 yen, balancing fiber, egg, and beef protein.
  • Tamakake Breakfast たまかけ朝食 (~300 to 320 yen): Hot rice, miso soup, raw egg, seasoned seaweed, and a small scoop of potato salad.
  • Sukiya rice sizing: Choosing Mini Rice (ごはんミニ) knocks 30 yen off the set price (dropping まぜのっけ朝食 to 290 yen), while upgrading to Large Rice (ごはん大盛) adds 40 yen.

Sukiya’s signature Mazenokke Breakfast pairs soft-boiled egg, okra, and bonito flakes over hot rice from around 320 yen, while the 200-yen monthly Suki Pass cuts 70 yen off every gyudon or curry order.

Two practical tips make Sukiya especially friendly for regular diners:

  1. The 200-yen monthly Sukipass: Sold at the start of every month for 200 yen via the table tablet or Sukiya app, the Sukipass takes 70 yen off every gyudon (牛丼), curry (カレー), or eel bowl (うな丼) for the entire calendar month (up to 3 bowls per receipt, unlimited visits). While it does not discount まぜのっけ朝食 trays directly, buying three regular gyudon bowls in a month already puts you ahead by 10 yen, and every bowl after that saves a flat 70 yen.
  2. Multilingual table tablets (タブレット注文): Sukiya’s seat-side touchscreen tablets switch cleanly to English with clear photos for every rice size and side option.

3. Yoshinoya (吉野家, 04:00 to 11:00 AM): Earliest 4 AM opening and unlimited free rice refills

Yoshinoya opens its breakfast menu one full hour earlier than Matsuya and Sukiya—running from 04:00 to 11:00 AM. For night-shift workers finishing at 4:00 AM or travelers catching the first airport train, Yoshinoya is the go-to early stop:

  • Morning Beef Bowl Set 朝牛セット (Asa-gyu Set, ~519 to 552 yen for Small or Regular bowl): Pairs a classic Yoshinoya gyudon bowl and miso soup with 1 of 5 side choices (小鉢): raw egg (玉子), soft-boiled egg (半熟玉子), mini green salad (ミニサラダ), natto (納豆), or pickled cabbage (お新香). Ordering the 朝牛セット before 11:00 AM saves roughly 80 to 110 yen compared to buying those items separately at lunch.
  • Morning Platter Sets (朝定食 – Asa Teishoku, ~430 to 620 yen): Includes 納豆定食 (Natto set), 納豆牛小鉢定食 (Natto + mini beef dish), 焼魚定食 (Grilled salmon set), and Wハムエッグ納豆定食 (Double ham & sunny-side-up egg with cabbage salad and natto).

Yoshinoya serves breakfast earliest from 04:00 to 11:00 AM, and all morning Teishoku platter sets include unlimited free hot rice refills.

Yoshinoya’s biggest advantage on its platter sets is unlimited free rice upgrades and refills (ご飯増量・おかわり無料):

  1. Every 定食 (Teishoku platter set) at Yoshinoya—both morning 朝定食 and all-day Teishoku—includes free large rice on your first bowl (ご飯増量無料) plus unlimited free hot rice refills (おかわり無料). Just ask staff or tap the tablet for *”Gohan okawari onegaishimasu”* (ご飯おかわりお願いします). Note that unlimited refills apply to 朝定食 trays, not to the single-bowl 朝牛セット.
  2. Before paying at the register, check the 吉野家公式アプリ (Yoshinoya Official App) for 30-to-50-yen morning coupons and scan your V-Point, Rakuten Point, or d-Point card alongside PayPay or credit card payment.
